Rocket City
Title
Rocket City
Description
Images relating to NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Apollo 11, the first mission to land humans on the moon, was launched from the Marshall Space Flight Center in 1969, establishing Huntsville as "Rocket City".
Note: Many images in this collection include Wernher Von Braun, director of the Marshall Space Flight Center from 1960-1970. Von Braun was a member of the Nazi Party beginning in 1937, actively working with the Nazi regime to advance space travel technology in Germany throughout the Holocaust and World War II until surrendering to United States forces in 1945. As we study and celebrate the accomplishments that took place in Huntsville with the successful launch of Apollo 11, it is essential to recognize the anti-Semitism, racism, and violence that are irremovable from the legacy of Von Braun and NASA.
